When my kids were young I tried not to get too much into playing one upmanship about my kids. While others were talking about how their kids were at the top of their pre-school class or that their son or daughter was talking well before any of the other kids their age, I tried to keep my tongue in check and not brag.
Well, if you will allow a proud dad a moment I am going to break that pattern, just this one time anyway.
Yesterday we received in the mail a letter from Horizon High School where my son will begin High School next Fall. It was from the supervising teachers/staff in charge of the SOAR program at Horizon. The nickname for Horizon High School is the "Hawks" so the name fits. SOAR stands for "Students Of Academic Rigor". SOAR is the Honors program at Horizon and my son filled out an application to see if he would be accepted into the program a few weeks ago. His GPA was high enough to qualify and he got good recommendations from his Middle School Teachers. I will cut to the chase now. Calvin was accepted! I was so thrilled for him, and of course it made me quite proud. He even gets to miss part of a day of school in a couple of weeks to meet the teachers and other students in the program and receive their groups first SOAR challenge. Calvin's acceptance in the High School Honors program comes on the heels of my daughter Kendra being accepted into the Shadow Ridge Middle School Honors classes a few weeks ago. She begins Middle School their next Fall.
So there you have it, I have two kids, one starting High School and the other starting Middle School, who both have qualified for the Honors Programs in their respective schools. Needless to say I am very proud of both of them, and I'm praying that God will use these programs to grow Calvin and Kendra in some very exciting and challenging ways.
Okay, I'm done bragging now!
Right on! Soaring kids are usually an accurate reflection of mom and dad.
